Trump Mocks Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney Following Ryan Speech Criticizing Trumpism in the GOP

Former President Donald Trump fired back at former House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) following a speech that Paul gave on Thursday criticizing the amount of control Trump has on the Republican Party. In a statement, Trump called Ryan a RINO (Republican In Name Only), mocked the Romney/Ryan presidential loss in 2012, and made fun of Ryan by mentioning how he was booed off stage at a Trump rally in 2016.

Trump believes that Ryan’s presence on the board of Fox News (often called “Faux News” or “Fake News” by Trump and his supporters) has tainted the news corporation saying, “Ryan went on the board of Fox (Fox will never be the same!) that Fox totally lost its way and became a much different place, with millions of its greatest supporters fleeing for good.” In August of 2020, Trump said, unfortunately, Fox has become fake news – I don’t know what happens to these people. At least the other side, you know where they’re coming from.”

Trump described Ryan as, “a curse to the Republican Party” and, “a weak and ineffective leader” that, “has no clue what needs to redone for our Country”.

In a speech Thursday night, at the Reagan presidential library, Ryan warned the GOP about drifting away from the “core principles of conservatism”. Ryan said, “Once again, we conservatives find ourselves at a crossroads. And here’s the reality that we have to face: If the conservative cause depends on the populist appeal of one personality, or of second-rate imitations, then we’re not going anywhere.

Voters looking for Republican leaders want to see independence and mettle.” While Ryan was not courageous or bold enough to mention Trump by name, he clearly meant him, considering the growing number of establishment Republicans criticizing Trump’s influence on the GOP. Trump has consistently mocked and made fun of establishment, so-called RINOs like Ryan who lacks Trump’s unique persona and attitude.

After the controversy surrounding the 2020 election and the January 6th protest, the GOP and the Conservative movement has reached a crossroads. Some figures are pushing the GOP to become, “the party of Trump”, while others, like Paul Ryan, Liz Cheney, Kevin McCarthy want the party to be nicer, more optical and hold rhetoric vastly different from Trump.

Paul Ryan has faced a lot of heat from various conservative commentators on Twitter. Lauren Boebert, U.S. Rep. from Colorado, blamed Ryan for the GOP losing its majority in the House in 2018.

Representative Mat Gaetz from Florida taunted Ryan, saying, “Taking advice on party building from Paul Ryan would be like taking advice on how to interact with your in-laws from Meghan Markle.”
