Correction officers from Washington Parish, Louisiana have received extreme amounts of backlash due to a photo they took with a criminal they arrested who robbed a bank in Mississippi. In the photo, four armed officers and two hunting dogs are pictured surrounding a shirtless Eric Boykin, a bank robber who had been on the run for two days.
Critics are pushing for the officers to be disciplined for the photo. However the Department of Public Safety and Corrections merely acknowledged that the photo was taken in poor judgement. Critics have said that these officers are dehumanizing Boykin by posing for a photo with him as if he’s a trophy.
Ashraf Esmail, an associate professor of Criminal Justice at Dillard University, was outraged over this picture. Esmail told WWL-TV, “It brings about the history of slavery when you think about hunting of African Americans at one time. With the issue of law enforcement and racial justice this past year, it really gives off a very, very bad optic.”
Journalist, Josie Duffy Rice, also bashed the officers, saying, “so either 1) none of the people involved, from the officers to the news station to the staffer who posted this, realized what a bad look this is or 2) they do know how it looks, and that’s why they posted it. those are the only two possibilities! and they are both very very bad.”

Talk show host, Joe Madison, accused the officers of treating the arrested criminal, like an “animal”.

Many other Twitter users piled on attacking the officers.
Why take the picture otherwise? This isn’t evidence, it’s not proof of anyone’s injuries (or lack thereof). It’s a trophy.

Surprisingly, one Twitter user defended the police, saying, “I think it’s a great picture. Everyone is smiling. People upset when police brutality pic show and this pic seems like all even the prisoner is happy. Great pic and not racist so don’t make it racist.”

Boykin was charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held in Jefferson Davis County Jail currently. A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety and Corrections said, “The picture should not have been taken, it was poor judgment. We regret that it happened and will use this incident for sensitivity training for our staff.” Other officials have said that even though the picture was inappropriate, the officers have not broken any rules and insisted that this will be used as a training tool for all employees.
From this news story, one can learn that the “woke” mob will never stop coming after you. Over the past years, news headlines continue to be filled with more and more stories on how white people are inherently racist, misogynistic, bigoted, hold a unique white privilege, etc. You must always be conscientious of your racial identity and how others can use that against you, from college applications, job opportunities, to leisurely activities.
