Tucker Carlson Demands the Name of the Person Who ‘Illegally’ Unmasked Him from NSA Director Paul Nakasone

On Wednesday, Fox News host Tucker Carlson called for the revelation of the name of the individual that “illegally” unmasked him to allow NSA monitoring of his private communications. “Unmasking” occurs when an intelligence community decides to reveal the name of an American citizen that is in contact with foreign individuals that are currently under surveillance. Officials with specific security clearances can request unmasking of an individual if they have good reason to.

It was revealed publicly last year that the Obama administration was seeking to “unmask” former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn during the Russia investigation. Once Flynn’s private communications with the then-Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak were reported on by The Washington Post, Flynn resigned. The leaking of “unmasked” names to media outlets like The Washington Post or in Carlson’s case, Axios, is illegal as Carlson claims.

In his monologue last night, Carlson attacked the NSA Director Gen. Paul Nakasone, demanding the name of the individual who illegally unmasked him. Carlson claims his identity should have been referred to internally as a “US journalist, or American journalist”.

Carlson said, “By law, I should have been identified internally merely as a US journalist, or American journalist. That’s the law. But that’s not how I was identified, I was identified by name. I was unmasked. People in the building learned who I was, and then my name and the contents of my emails left that building at the NSA and wound up with a news organization in Washington. That is illegal. In fact, it is precisely what this law was designed to prevent in the first place … We cannot have intelligence agencies used as instruments of political control.”

A fired-up Carlson also called for the NSA Director Nakasone and the Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines to “explain who asked” for his name to be unmasked “immediately”. Carlson believes that the NSA and other government intelligence agencies need to be held accountable for this, saying, “You can’t have a democracy in a place where unaccountable spy agencies keep people in line by leaking the contents of their emails, discrediting them with their own emails, which they thought were private. You can’t. It doesn’t work if you allow that.”

In response to Axios, a Fox News spokesperson defended Carlson, saying they “support any of our hosts pursuing interviews and stories free of government interference.”

As we reported on June 29th, “the National Security Agency released a statement that appears to deny any kind of spying on Fox News Host Tucker Carlson following accusations from Carlson. The statement from the NSA says Carlson’s allegations are ‘untrue’, saying, ‘Tucker Carlson has never been an intelligence target of the Agency and the NSA has never had any plans to try to take his program off the air’. The statement continued, denying the claims, saying ‘With limited exceptions (e.g. an emergency) NSA may not target a US citizen without a court order that explicitly authorizes the targeting.

Carlson labeled the NSA’s statement as ‘an infuriating dishonest formal statement’ and said it was ‘an entire paragraph of lies written purely for the benefit of the intel community’s lackeys at CNN and MSNBC.’ The Fox host also claimed that the NSA did not deny his original claims, saying, ‘the NSA has read my private emails without my permission, period. That’s what we said. Today’s statement from the NSA does not deny that.‘”

Conservatives across Twitter have rushed to defend Carlson and attack intelligence agencies like the NSA. South Carolina U.S. Senate Candidate Tim Swain called for the dismantling of the national security apparatus, saying “This is the direct result of the Russia Hoax/Spygate and no one going to prison for those crimes. It is time to dismantle the national security apparatus.”

Newsmax White House Correspondent Emerald Robinson also likened this situation to the “Russia Hoax”, saying, “The NSA is going to try to run the Russia Hoax on Tucker Carlson. Just watch.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called for the firing of the individuals that allegedly leaked Carlson’s emails to the media and accused our intelligence agencies of being tools used in political warfare: “All of those, at the NSA, involved in the unmasking of Tucker Carlson & leaking his personal emails to a media company in Washington should be fired immediately. Our intelligence agencies are not meant to be used in political warfare by the ruling regime. We aren’t Russia.”

Neither NSA Director Paul Nakasone nor the Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines has commented on the situation.
